Scholarships were on the menu for McDonald’s employee and Hollister resident Richard Mattish who took home $2,500 for college this summer.
Mattish had worked at the McDonald’s in Hollister for two years and was selected as one of 53 winners for the National Employee Scholarship Program this July.
“He was always responsible – very great with the customers,” said Marissa Carlisle, the supervisor for the McDonald’s in Hollister. “He was just one of those outstanding employees – the model employee.”
Every academic year, McDonald’s selects one outstanding student-employee from each state and the District of Columbia to receive a $2,500 scholarship, according to their website. The winners are selected based on job performance, community involvement, academic achievements and essay content.
“He was always on time, always a quick learner,” Carlisle said. “We could always count on him, which was great.”
Mattish joined the McDonald’s team in Hollister in the summer of 2012, following in the steps of his father who worked at same site almost 20 years before when he was a student in high school.
Carlisle was proud to see her former employee – who has since moved to South Dakota to start school – take home such a prestigious award.
“We were ecstatic.  We were just so happy,” she said. “We were proud of him because it’s kind of a rare thing – only 53 (winners) in the nation. We were really proud of him.”
