A group of citizens conversing over the controversial county Growth Control Initiative will follow through on a pledge to form a committee and continue “consensus building” talks.

The first committee meeting to discuss the March 2 ballot initiative, otherwise known as Measure G, will take place Tuesday, Oct. 7.

The panel plans to author a comprehensive list of “best possible outcomes” for future development of the county that were tossed around at the most recent meeting Sept. 17. They will also discuss strategies for finding common ground on the issue.

Joe Morris, the San Juan Bautista cattle rancher who founded the group, said the meeting Tuesday will occur at a committee member’s home and it will not be open to the public.

“There’s some legwork to be done, and the committee is intended to do that legwork,” he said.

The consensus building group – made up of proponents and opponents of Measure G – has held two marathon workshops in the past two months. They culminated their Sept. 17 meeting by agreeing to form the committee.

The Growth Control Initiative has been the subject of debate, mostly among landowners against the proposal and land preservationists who favor it.

The measure is intended to preserve agricultural land by changing the zoning laws in the county to increase the difficulty for landowners, mostly farmers, to sell land to developers.
