After enduring the San Juan Bautista charity run for the past two decades, its participants still aren’t tired of it.
On Feb. 1, the San Juan Mission 10-mile and 5-kilometer Run will celebrate its 20th anniversary over the course’s historic and scenic setting.
Hollister attorney Bill Tiffany has been race director for the last 10 years. He said about five or six years ago organizers added the 5k run – about three miles – to attract more participants who may otherwise be intimidated by the thought of running 10 miles.
The 10-mile portion of the event starts at 10 a.m. and ends at the Mission San Juan Bautista. The 5k is scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m.
“We try to get a larger group every year,” Tiffany said.
Tiffany called it a “relatively small run” but said the core group usually returns year after year. And race organizers are always looking for new runners, he said.
The scenery is the run’s draw, Tiffany said, because of the area’s “historic and pleasant” setting. But the event’s camaraderie – including “the local, friendly volunteers” – also creates a comforting, supportive atmosphere, he said.
After the race, Tiffany said it’s always nice to have a diverse offering of Mission City restaurants to curb appetites.
The deadline for pre-registration is Jan. 27, but Tiffany said race-day sign-ups will be allowed. To register online, go to www.active.com or www.theschedule.com. The fee is $20 for pre-registered runners and $25 for those who register on race day.
All proceeds from the event go to the Hollister Rotary Club, which will re-distribute the money into area scholarship funds. Prizes will also be awarded by age group and gender. For more information call Bill Tiffany at 637-0071.
Another charity run, a 10k, will take place June 14 to benefit the county’s Adult Literacy Program.
