San Benito High School counselor Andrew Prisco said there is a national trend that more students than ever are applying for colleges, and there has been a record number of applications sent in this year.
And with so many applicants, colleges are being selective as to whom they accept, he said.
He said this year about 25 percent to 30 percent of students will go to a four-year college. Sixty to 70 percent will probably go to a community college, he said. Prisco added that there are some students who will go straight into a job or take some time off before attending college.
As for David Bergen, the senior who earned a 4.83 grade-point average, he decided to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, said his mother, Cory Bergen.
He was offered to be placed into an accelerated master’s program for five years in biochemistry, his mother said.
