Judge Steven Sanders swore in four community members who
recently completed five weeks of CASA training as Court Appointed
Special Advocates, on April 18. Each can now be assigned to one of
the children in the county’s foster care system who are on CASA’s
waiting list for an advocate. CASA advocates are trained volunteers
who help support and speak up for children to ensure their
emotional, physical and educational needs are met during their time
in the dependency system. As many as 80+ children from the
community each year live in the San Benito County foster care
system because of parental abuse or neglect.

Each day they face uncertainty and trauma, their lives a sea of ever-changing professionals who, although well meaning, are nonetheless strangers; police, social workers, foster parents, therapists, judges, lawyers and many others.

This is where CASA Advocates step in, there is one person consistently there for the child, one person whose reassuring presence and focus does not change; their volunteer CASA Advocate.
