Monterey – The Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey, which includes San Benito County, named a new bishop on Tuesday.

Bishop Richard J. Garcia, 59, becomes the second bishop of Hispanic origin in California, according to the Diocese of Monterey.

Garcia will be installed on Jan. 30. He replaces Bishop Sylvester Ryan, who is stepping down in accordance with church law requiring retirement at age 75.

The Diocese of Monterey encompasses the approximately 33,000 Catholics in San Benito County, according to the Association of Religion data archives. The Diocese of Monterey includes St. Benedict and Sacred Heart in Hollister, Old Mission San Juan Bautista and Immaculate Conception in Tres Pinos.
