Capping a nine-month development program for local community leaders, Leadership Morgan Hill graduated 21 and Leadership Gilroy graduated 23 participants at special ceremonies this week.
Under the canopy of smoke from the raging Croy Canyon fire, Leadership Morgan Hill handed out diplomas Monday night at Guglielmo Winery. Leadership Gilroy’s class received their diplomas Thursday night at Goldsmith Seeds.
The transition marks the close of the 2002 class and the launch of recruitment for candidates in the class for 2003. Over the past year, class members participated in intensive briefings on local government, education, state government, economic development, law and justice, the news media, and health and social service organizations, as well as leadership training. Many of the graduates already serve in leadership positions in the public and non-profit sectors.

Morgan Hill’s keynote speaker was Santa Clara County Supervisor Don Gage. The group’s class project was a Back-to-School Family Night in a park, featuring a movie shown outdoors.
Gilroy’s graduates are Shawn Arine, Robin Balanesi, Robert Barham, Marsha Becht, Erwin Boggs, Liz Brown, Kirsten Carr, Rick Cauley, Tara Chappell, Leticia Clay, Juanita Contin, Greg Deogracia, Bob Dillon, Steve Foster, Judy Hess, Karen LaCorte, Erin Monroe, Carol Peters, Adrian Ramirez, Carla Ruigh, Debra Vaurs and Stephanie Wemusa and Shirley Willard.
Leadership Gilroy’s graduation speaker was Dick Nicholls, executive director of the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association. As a class project, Gilroy’s group volunteered at the Garlic Festival and donated the revenue towards a scholarship for next year’s class. They are also participating in a “Principal for a Day” program, which places each of them in an interactive role within a Gilroy school for one day.
Applications for the 2003 leadership program in Morgan Hill are due Nov. 15 and available on the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce web site at: www.morganhill.org or at chamber offices. Leadership Gilroy applications are at the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce and due by Nov. 1.
The primary purpose of both leadership programs is to provide high-level briefings and skills training to develop future leaders to serve on boards, taskforces, commissions and committees in the public and non-profit sectors of the community. Local leadership programs are modeled after similar programs in 56 California communities.
