‘Kindness’ comes to San Benito

Habitat for Humanity of San Benito county has started a new company program called “A Brush with Kindness.” The goal of the program is to help low-income homeowners whose ability to maintain their homes has been affected by age, disability or other family circumstances.

The program will focus on exterior home repair such as painting, landscaping and cleanup that can be performed by volunteers and Habitat for Humanity staff. Priority will be given to homeowners with disabilities or senior citizens. Groups of five to 10 volunteers work along side able-bodied homeowners to complete the repairs.

Homeowners can complete an application in which they complete some basic information about their home expenses and their repair needs. Possible repairs include roof repairs, painting, repair of doors and windows, landscaping or adding a wheelchair ramp.

“With a moderate investment of funds and the use of volunteer labor, Habitat for Humanity can now help low-income homeowners to continue to live independently and securely in their homes, remove blight and most importantly, help preserve the affordable housing stock in San Benito County” staff wrote in a press release.

As a small chapter, Habitat for Humanity of San Benito County has not been able to do home builds from scratch, but in 2008 the board memers began accepting applications for home improvement projects. They completed the first project last fall.
