Musgrave, 23, received her bachelor’s of arts degree in journalism from California State University, Chico in May, and gained experience at the nationally renowned campus newspaper, The Orion, as a features and entertainment reporter. She has also written for travel publications.
Musgrave, who began work this week, has already been impressed with the county’s hospitality.
“Everybody is really nice here,” she said. “It’s one of those nice, small-town places.”
Musgrave said she chose the Free Lance because the community newspaper atmosphere would provide a great opportunity to learn.
Free Lance Associate Publisher/Executive Editor Mike Fitzgerald said the newspaper was fortunate to hire someone with Musgrave’s enthusiasm.
“Erin was an outstanding writer and reporter at Chico State,” Fitzgerald said. “She was also highly recommended by a senior editor at National Geographic, who recognized her talent and passion for journalism. We are really excited to have Erin join our newsroom team.”
Musgrave decided on a career in print journalism because writing has always been her strongest suit. And the newspaper business will allow her to continually absorb knowledge.
“I was always afraid that when I got out of school, I would instantly become stupid because I wasn’t learning things anymore,” she said sarcastically. “So, being a reporter, I am always able to continue learning.”
