The University of California Cooperative Extension recently launched a Web site to serve as an information portal for California gardeners.

The U.C. Statewide Master Gardener Program staff launched the site – http://cagardenweb.ucdavis.edu – to organize and extend the University of California’s vast store of research-based information about gardening, landscapes and lawns to the public.

The site focuses on sustainable gardening practices and uses a question-and-answer format to offer solutions. A blog on the site’s homepage, which is updated weekly, offers gardening information pertinent to that season. The site also links to gardening resources on other U.C. Web pages.

“When U.C. sites have thorough content covering a particular topic, we link to that site rather than duplicating it,” said Pam Giesel, the academic coordinator for the U.C.’s master gardener program.

The Web site also provides gardeners will free access to updated information from the California Master Gardener Handbook.

Special features include:

– calculators for estimating landscape water needs

– guidelines for conserving and managing water during a drought

– vegetable gardening FAQ’s

– and sections on gardening basics, how to find a local master gardener, a glossary of terms and information on classes and events.
