– The Kiwanis Club of Hollister is hosting its eighth annual
benefit pasta feed today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at San Benito High
School. Take-out orders only are available for the pasta feed, and
orders can be picked up at Baler Alley behind the school cafeteria.
Tickets are $8 for adults, and $4 fo
r children 12 and under. Meal includes pasta with meat or
meatless sauce, garlic bread, salad and dessert. Proceeds benefit
the Kiwanis Club scholarship fund for graduating seniors.

Birding on Lone Tree Road

HOLLISTER – The Wild Bird Center of Los Gatos is hosting a spring birding event this Saturday on Lone Tree Road northeast of Hollister off Fairview Road. The road, which winds to approximately 1,200 feet in elevation, is considered a good spot for catching a glimpse of various birds, including golden eagles, Lazuli Bunting, sparrows and Lawrence’s Goldfinch. Pinnacles community forum

KING CITY – Pinnacles National Monument staff will host a community forum at the King City Library, Saturday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to offer updates on the California Condor Recovery Program, and to gather community input.

31 cent scoop night

HOLLISTER – Baskin-Robbins is hosting its third annual 31 Cent Scoop Night, at 1740 Airline Hwy., in Hollister, April 29, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.. More than 2,700 Baskin-Robbins stores nationwide will be participating. As part of the event, the company is donating $100,000 to the National Volunteer Fire Council, a nonprofit that serves the interests of volunteer fire, EMS and rescue services.

Mental health services open house

HOLLISTER – San Benito County Behavioral Health Department staff will be hosting a community event Saturday, May 9, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Esperanza Center, 327 Fifth St., in Hollister. The event is meant to bring together community members as they promote “empowerment and recovery in the mental health field.” The event will include skits and a panel about mental health; a watermelon eating contest and water balloon toss; face painting and other activities for families.

Valley Medical Center Foundation hosts glider event

HOLLISTER – The Valley Medical Center Foundation, the Bay Area Glider Rides and the Hollister Gliding Club are hosting an accessible event at the Hollister Airport May 1. The event is meant to offer an opportunity to fly for people with physical disabilities. Flights are $90 each, and a barbecue lunch is available for $10. Ten flights are available, at will start at 11 a.m.

FDA recall expanded

UNION CITY – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced that a voluntary recall by Union International Food has been expanded. The recall includes sauces, oils and oil blends sold under the Uncle Chen and Lian How brands. The items have been sold to retailers, wholesalers, distributors, and restaurants in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. They ranged from six-ounce containers to one-gallon plastic or glass bottles. A complete list of the items recalled can be viewed at www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/unioninternational_list3.html.

The items may contain Salmonella Rissen, a food-borne illness. In March, the company recalled its dry spice products. To date, 57 cases of the illness have been reported. The FDA, the California Department of Public Health and Union International Food Co. are continuing an investigation.

Boy Scout flag fundraiser

HOLLISTER – Boy Scout Troops 777 and 787 are soliciting donations for their Holliday Flag Program. The Scouts put up and take down American Flags in the Downtown area on eight national holidays each year. In addition, the Scouts have participated in other projects in downtown, at local schools, and at Veterans’ Memorial Park.

The funds raised have allowed the boys to take a 50-mile backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevadas. This summer, the Scout camp will include a 50-mile canoe trip, and the money raised will cut the cost for the Boys to attend.

Stamp out hunger food drive

HOLLISTER – The National Association of Letter Carriers will be hosting its “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive Saturday, May 9. To donate, residents can put a bag of nonperishable food items near their mailbox. The letter carriers will pick up the food and bring it to local food banks.
