BLM lifts fire restrictions
HOLLISTER – With the onset of cooler temperatures, the Bureau of Land Management will lift fire restrictions on public lands within the Hollister Field Office jurisdiction effective Oct. 15. This includes the Tumey, Griswold, Ciervo and Panoche hills.
Visitors will be able to have open campfires and barbecue fires at campsites on BLM public lands with a valid California campfire permit, according to Fire Mitigation Specialist Michael Chiodini. Chiodini also cautioned that while there have been cooler temperatures, some of the grass and brush are still dry in some areas. Visitors should use appropriate methods to contain campfires, build them in areas free of vegetation, and be certain that fire is completely extinguished after use. In addition visitors need to have a shovel and water on hand to completely extinguish the campfire before leaving.
Additionally all open routes in the Tumey, Griswold, and Panoche hills, which are gated, locked and closed to public access during the upland game season from April to October, are now open to public access. These roads are closed to protect wildlife habitat values, rare, threatened, and endangered species and paleontological resources. Foot access is allowed in these areas all year.
