Become a Red Cross Member

HOLLISTER – March is Red Cross Month and the American Red Cross is asking people to join them in helping those in need by volunteering their time, making a donation, taking a class or giving blood.

“When someone provides a hot meal to a disaster victim, gives blood, takes a first aid class or helps someone in the military, they join the Red Cross,” said Sharon Crino, the CEO of the Monterey Bay Area Chapter, in a press release. “We want to say ‘thank you’ to all who support us. That support enables us to provide help and hope to those who need our assistance.”

For nearly 100 years, U.S. presidents have called on people to support the American Red Cross and its humanitarian mission. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first to proclaim March as Red Cross month.

The Monterey Bay Area chapter, which serves San Benito County, responded and provided assistance in 48 local disasters last year. They processed 81 emergency military calls, trained 10,000 people in first aid and water safety and taught 7,300 people disaster preparedness.

“We work very diligently to help those in need,” Crino said. “Whether out on a disaster, alongside our troops, at a blood drive or in a first aid class, Red Cross workers touch the lives of millions of people every year.”

CHP focuses on safe teen driving

SACRAMENTO – During California Teen Safe Driving Week March 6-12, the California Highway Patrol is warning the state’s newest drivers that distraction can be life changing.

“Teenagers tend to think they’re invincible and can multitask while driving,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow, in a press release. “In reality, they’re inexperienced when it comes to driving and they need to recognize the responsibility and the risks associated with the privilege.

Text messaging, talking on a cell phone or eating can be dangerous, potentially deadly distractions when done behind the wheel. Other distractions can be passenger interference, adjusting the radio or changing a CD.

“Officers see firsthand the destruction cause by inattention,” Farrow said. “It only takes a second of distraction to result in a crash.”

During a four-year period, from 2005-2008, drivers between the ages of 15-19 were involved in more than 20,000 collisions where inattention was a factor. Among those crashes, 41 percent resulted in injury or death.

To address the growing problem and help drive home the message, the CHP acquired a grant to fund an educational campaign. Efforts to reduce distracted driving through “Impact Teen Drivers – Connecting Key Players” continues through Sept.30.

Surrogate parents needed

HOLLISTER – The San Benito Office of Education and Special Education departments need volunteers to help with a surrogate parent program. Public school districts train and appoint surrogate parents for a child with a disability under the following circumstances:

– The biological parent or adoptive parents cannot be identified or located after reasonable effort; or parental rights have been terminated

– The child does not have a court-appointed person authorized to make educational decisions

– The child’s court-appointed “parent” is unwilling or unable to serve as the surrogate parents

– The child is an unaccompanied homeless youth.

Surrogate parents play a unique and critical role in supporting the special education rights and needs of children.

If you would like to learn more about the program, call Lorna Gilbert, the director of special services at 637-5393, ext. 131.
