Youth Alliance to honor hero
HOLLISTER
– Hollister Youth Alliance recently announced the nominations of
three local people for the 2008 Community Hero Award.
The winner of the award is to be announced at a reception at
5:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Cedar House, 7511 Pacheco Pass Hwy.
Nominees are Vince Luna, a League of United Latin American
Citizens youth adviser for more than 19 years; Debbie Ruiz of
Community Solutions for her work as an advocate for survivors of
sexual assault and domestic violence; and Cindy Parr for her
dedication to serving the local homeless community.
Tickets to the reception and dinner are $45, and are available

San Benito Historical Society meeting
HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Historical Society will host its year-end holiday general meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at the SBCHS Museum, 498 Fifth St., in Hollister. After the general meeting, a reading of interest will be offered from “The History of San Benito and Monterey Counties” followed by refreshments. Guests are encouraged to bring holiday dessert to share. Coffee, tea and water will be provided. The event is free of charge to the public. Choral project returns
HOLLISTER – The Choral Project returns for a local performance at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, off Fairview Road.
The Choral Project is an internationally recognized choir. Admission is $10 at the door.
Rummage sale for international travelers
HOLLISTER – San Benito High School students who will be traveling to Mexico and London in the spring will be hosting a rummage fair Saturday, Dec. 6 from 8 a.m. to noon at Memorial and Sunnyslope Dr. professional buildings.
Pear Harbor remembrance
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – The San Juan Bautista Veterans of Foreign Wars post will honor veterans and present a ceremony in remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
The observance begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the post, 58 Monterey St., San Juan Bautista.
It was at 7:53 a.m. local time on Dec. 7, 1941, when planes descended on U.S. Naval facilities, launching events that would propel the United States into World War II, a conflict that ultimately cost more than a quarter-million Americans their lives. On Dec. 7 alone, more than 2, 400 men, women and children died.

HOLLISTER – A feature story about a wandering tortoise that appeared in last week’s edition of the Weekend Pinnacle brought response from a reader who said she is the person who located Tina Turtle.
Reader Cecilia Ghiorzi said she found the tortoise that wandered away from the Moran family home four years ago near the corner of Highland and Albright drives, some four miles from the Union Road home the tortoise left.
Resource Conservation vacancy
HOLLISTER – The San Benito Resource Conservation District staff this week issued an invitation for applicants to its Board of Directors.
Applicants must be registered voters living in San Benito County or be a designated agent of a resident local landowner. Candidates also should possess an interest or knowledge in conservation and be familiar with natural resource problems and opportunities in San Benito County.

YMCA sign ups start
HOLLISTER – Open enrollment for YMCA’s elementary kickball program starts Dec. 15 for grades first through fifth. Super sports basketball signs ups start at the same time for 2 ½ to 5-year-olds. Other programs include outdoor hockey for sixth and eighth grades. All programs start in January.

HOLLISTER – The annual reorganization meeting of the San Benito County Republican Central Committee will be Thursday, Dec. 4. New members will be installed and officers for 2009-10 term will be elected.
