The streets of Hollister were filled with vendor booths selling motorcycle clothing and promoting customization of bikes, but nestled on Sixth Street a few booths were manned by local residents who want to get the word out about their local organizations.

In a late night stealth operation, about 25 officers from several local and state law enforcement agencies shut down an illegal gambling venue masquerading as an Internet sweepstakes cafe on First Street in Gilroy Aug. 1, confiscating everything in the store, arresting three people and snapping handcuffs on dozens of others.

Every September I look for the white-crowned sparrows to arrive. A small flock takes up residence each fall in an overgrown Lady Banks rose that covers the side of my neighbor's garage. They join the house finches, chestnut-backed chickadees and lesser goldfinches at my feeders. White-crowned sparrows are distinctive, with a narrow white stripe on the top of their heads, black stripes on either side of the white “crown” and broad white eyebrows.

Before Cheeto became my cat, he was a cute orange and white stray kitten. He was found in a school for special needs children. One of the children who found him took him to his teacher (my brother-in-law’s sister). She decided to keep him as a class pet. The kids fed and cared for him. But like we all know, school years come to an end.

On Feb. 28, the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center received a call from Almaden Quicksilver County Park in San Jose about an adult golden eagle found struggling on the ground and powerless to fly away.
