Well-seasoned cuisine: Casserole captures the flavors of two dishes

I've made chilaquiles at home once, and it's a tasty snack. But the tortilla chips-and-cheese dish isn't really substantial - or healthy enough - to be a full meal. But with a few improvements, thanks to a Rachael Ray cookbook, the flavors of chilaquiles can be turned into a real meal.

Flores: Classic spy tale is slow paced but full of twists

"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," directed by Tomas Alfredson, looks and feels like a movie out of a different era. It is a thoughtful spy thriller with a much slower pace that relies on a musical score to build the momentum rather than bombs or explosions. If the "Mission Impossible" series is at one end of the spy caper spectrum, "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is at the other end.

Well, I hope that by the time you're reading this column that we have had a few days of rain. It's the middle of January and we have had less than two inches of rain since July. Weather forecasters have predicted a wet weekend so let's hope they're right.

Originally written in 2006 and recently adapted into a popular movie, "Water For Elephants" by Sara Gruen is an enchanting and enjoyable novel about a depression-era traveling circus. The story is first set at a retirement home in (nearly) present day, where Jacob Jankovski informs the reader "I am ninety. Or ninety-three. One or the other."

Patriotic essay wins award from VFW

Members of the VFW Post 9242 honored a young local writer at a recent meeting for winning this year’s Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest. The winner this year was Dominic Barrios, who read his essay aloud at the meeting. Barrios received a certificate of merit and $100 for his winning essay. His parents, John and Dena Barrios, attended the awards ceremony with him.
