First 5 playgroups use storyteller to teach parents, children

When Robert LaBatte speaks he has a soft voice, but it is one that easily commands the attention of others as he shares the tales he has collected from Native American tribes in 45 states. He recently recounted three stories for an audience at R.O. Hardin School, which included children and their parents, as part of the First 5 San Benito's family playgroup program.

Gavilan’s career day is set for Wednesday

It’s time to update those resumes, dry-clean that business attire and brush up on some interviewing skills because Gavilan College has lined up 46 organizations for its annual career day at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Student Career Center at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. in Gilroy.

Cerra Vista student competes in pageant

Sophia Esparza, a 7-year-old student from Cerra Vista School, is competing in the Miss Jr. Pre-Teen Oakland/San Jose Pageant Competition on April 6 in San Francisco. She needs community businesses, organizations and private donors to become official sponsors in order to participate in the pageant.

Student artists receive accolades

The Women’s Club of Hollister held its annual Student Art Show Feb. 13. They received more than 70 entries from students in San Benito County. The contest was open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade who reside in San Benito County or attend school in San Benito County.

All-Star project focuses on preparedness

Audrey Liddle, a nine-year member of San Benito County 4-H, completed her All-Star Project March 16 at Tres Pinos School.

Daycare teacher charged, accused of dosing cups with pills

A pre-school teacher from Hollister was charged Thursday on suspicion of 10 misdemeanors after a fellow teacher reported that she had dosed toddlers’ sippy cups with sleeping pills, authorities alleged.

Sharing the farm way with students

More than 900 third-grade students from around the county attended the annual San Benito County Farm Day at Bolado Park, from 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesday. The event is sponsored each year by the San Benito County Ag in the Classroom program through the Farm Bureau with help from more than 150 volunteers and presenters.

Buzz: Wonder Woofs approved for Rancho San Justo

Sean and Janelle Hagett will soon be touring Rancho San Justo Middle School with their golden retrievers Ranger and Sparks in tow as part of the Wonder Woofs program.

Teachers awarded checks to spend in the classroom

The San Benito County Retired Teachers' Association provided six grants to local teachers on Dec. 13 of $50 to spend in their classrooms. The grants were given by Local Division 26.
