Our first Red Phone caller of the week, fed up with noisy rattling of a manhole cover in front of her home, asked the Crimson Crusader to find out who was responsible for fixing such problems and spur them into action. Our caller has repeatedly complained about the noise created by the manhole cover, which keeps her awake at night.

The Crimson Crusader retired from fixing manhole covers two years ago, but made a call over to Jim Hart, a utility technician at the city’s Public Utilities Department. Hart said that sometimes the covers can become warped from being run over for several years. He took down our caller’s address and said that, time-permitting, a few utilities workers might be able to take a look at the irksome manhole cover Friday afternoon.

Residents with similar complaints should call the Public Utilities Department at 831-636-4377. So, fret not, dear caller, you’ll be sleeping soundly soon. In the meantime, picking up a pair of industrial-grade earplugs might make it easier to fall asleep.

a Bad Sign

Our second Red Phone caller of the week, concerned about the visibility of a stop sign on Memorial Drive near Sunset Drive by Hazel Hawkins Hospital, urged the Crimson Crusader to make sure city officials were aware of the problem.

The Crimson Crusader put in a call to Ray Rojas, Hollister’s street supervisor, to make sure the problem was addressed. Rojas said he would check out the intersections around that area to make sure the stop signs and other traffic-control devices are clearly visible to all motorists. Rojas said he expected to have a crew out there on Monday.
