Well, as one of those employees facing the loss of their job, I will respond to your heartless, uninformed comment. We do not think we are any different from anyone else facing layoffs. But guess what? You will see the same fight from employees all over the state, not just in Hollister. Our fight is about trying to save jobs.

We are not only fighting for each of our own positions, we are fighting for our fellow employees’ positions and for the services to the community that will inevitably be affected.

The solution to a lagging economy is the creation of jobs, not the elimination of jobs. How are you going to feel when your services are cut, but your water and sewer bills are increased? How are you going to feel when the next cut gets approved and they have nobody else to cut except fire and police?

I am a citizen of this community, too, and I know how that would make me feel. Our fight is all about trying to get the city to look at alternatives to layoffs, which include cuts in salary, work sharing and all of the other cost saving measures that we have suggested. We are fighting for the city to try to at least reduce the amount of layoffs. We know we can’t avoid it completely! Trust me!

We are polishing our resumes. But thanks for pointing out how lucky we are to have six months to find another job. Of course “lucky” is not how I’m feeling.

Renee Perales,

Hollister
