Dan Wood
Daniel Curtis Wood, the popular and gregarious manager of Hollister’s Washington Mutual Bank branch, died Dec. 5, 2002. He was 32.
Mr. Wood’s presence was felt in the bank on Tres Pinos Road. He had a smile for customers and greeted people warmly.
“He had a way of making a person feel immediately comfortable,” said Lana Adame, Wood’s friend and co-worker. “He’d welcome anyone into his office. It did not matter; he helped everyone.”
Mr. Wood lived in Santa Cruz, where he was an elected member of the Santa Cruz City School board since 2000 and was supposed to have been elected board president on the day of his funeral. He was a graduate of Soquel High School and San Jose State University, where he received a master’s in business administration. After working as a private investigator, he joined Washington Mutual in 1987, where his title was Vice President Financial Center Manager.
Mr. Wood, a runner and non-smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer in June and left the bank shortly after. He approached his illness as a challenge and continued to visit his co-workers even as his health deteriorated and he underwent chemotherapy treatment.
He coached youth soccer, volunteered while in high school to drive cancer patients to their appointments and in college worked for a suicide hotline. At the bank, he was involved in a program to raise money for cancer research.
Mr. Wood was known as a competitor who enjoyed tennis, volleyball and backgammon. He passionately played board games and took them along to chemotherapy appointments. Because of his competitive nature, friends and associates believed to the end that he would beat his disease.
For the past 15 years Mr. Wood ran in the Bay-to-Breakers race in San Francisco and the Wharf-to-Wharf race in Santa Cruz. In his last race in May, he noticed he had trouble breathing. Two weeks later he was diagnosed with cancer.
Mr. Wood is survived by his father and step-mother, Larry and Barbara Wood, of Washington, mother Joyce Wood of Trinity Center, siblings David Wood of Santa Cruz and Lynette Vandergrift of Coffee Creek, three nieces, one nephew and grandmother Eileen Clark of Pittsburg.
Mr. Wood’s funeral was Dec. 8. Donations are preferred to the Dan Wood Educational Fund, c/o Washington Mutual, 730 Ocean St., Santa Cruz 95060.
Carl McKown Breton Sr.
Carl McKown Breton Sr., a long time resident of Morgan Hill, died on Dec. 7, 2002. He was 70.
Mr. Breton was born on Sept. 6, 1932. He graduated from Live Oak High School and was employed at Johnson Lumber.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Caroline Breton, his children, Carl M. Breton Jr. of Salinas and Cathy Granata of Gilroy. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jarod and Nicholas Breton and Alyssa Granata.
Services were held Dec. 11 at Johnson Funeral Home in Morgan Hill. In place of flowers the family suggests donations to The Lions Club Scholarship Fund, PO Box 464, Morgan Hill, Ca 95038.
Harriet Madden
Artist and landscaper Harriet Madden died peacefully in her sleep in her
Morgan Hill home, just 20 days after her 101st birthday.
Mrs. Madden was born Nov. 4, 1901, to William G. Griffith and Clara F.
Hardy Griffith in Santa Barbara. She graduated from Santa Barbara
Girls’ School, attended Vassar College one year and graduated from the
University of California at Berkeley in 1925.
At Cal, she majored in English but took all of the classes she could in
landscape architecture, as well as some advanced mathematics classes in which she was one of only two women enrolled. She was a second-generation member of Delta Gamma fraternity while at Cal.
She pursued her love of horticulture, design and painting after her marriage to George Donald Hodgson in 1927. They lived in Salinas, then moved to Carmel, where they raised their two children. In the early years she designed and executed the construction of a number of gardens of government and
residential buildings in Salinas and Carmel.
She was divorced in 1947. Five years later she married Thomas Chester
Madden. They lived in Carmel Valley, Palo Alto and Santa Cruz before retiring in
Morgan Hill.
During the Maddens’ 48 years of marriage, they enjoyed their extended
family and travel. Cruises and motor trips to Southern California, the Southwest
and Mexico visiting friends and family provided them much joy. Mrs. Madden
always carried a camera with an eye for scenes she might wish to later paint.
She continued her painting into her 90s. And, always, wherever she lived,
her first priority was a beautiful garden.
Mrs. Madden was predeceased by her son William G. Hodgson in 1987 and by
her husband Thomas Chester Madden in 2000. She is survived by her daughter Ann
(Hodgson) Clarke of Mill Valley, her stepdaughters Eugenie M. Watson of Los
Altos and Meredith M. Moore (and her husband T. Charles Moore) of Sunnyvale and her daughter-in-law Carol W. Hodgson of Pebble Beach. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one step great grandchild.
The family wishes to thank Molini Hoko for her loving care of Mrs. Madden
for the past year and a half.
A memorial service will be held Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. at the San Martin Presbyterian Church in San Martin. Remembrances may be sent to the San Martin Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice.
Andrea Gonzalez
Andrea R. Gonzalez died at Hazel Hawkins Hospital in Hollister on Dec. 4, 2002. She was 93.
Mrs. Gonzalez was born in El Venado, Zacatecas, Mexico and came to San Benito County in 1948. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Teamsters Union Local 890 and was employed with local canneries prior to her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gustavo Gonzalez in 1964 her daughters Emma Rayas, Ofelia Barrios and sister Nicolasa Borrego. She is survived by her son and daughter, Gustavo Gonzalez of Hollister and Teresa Carlos of Modesto, 18 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and one great, great grandson.
The funeral was Dec. 7 with interment at Calvary Cemetery.
Hazel Garvis
Hazel G. Garvis died Dec. 4th in Templeton. She was 87.
Mrs. Garvis had lived in San Benito County for the last 27 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and a past member of Ridgemark Golf and Country Club and Bolado Women’s Group. She had been in San Luis Obispo County visiting her son when she fell ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Garvis, in 1978. She is survived by her children Nancy Donovan of Carmichael, Ronald Garvis of Atascadero and Wayne Garvis of Fresno, brother Leon Abma of Carmichael and 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5th and College Streets in Hollister at noon. Rev. Richard Clark will be the celebrant. Inurnment will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery. Donations are preferred to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Eva F. Campbell
Eva F. Campbell died Dec. 9, 2002 at Hazel Hawkins Hospital in Hollister. She was 91.
Mrs. Campbell was born in Hayward and moved to San Juan Bautista three years ago to be closer to her daughter and son in law.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur L. Campbell, in 1957 and is survived by her daughters Donna Lester of San Juan Bautista and Betty Campbell Soblin of Castro Valley and three grandchildren.
Arrangements and cremation are through Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home and Gavilan Hills Crematory. Family inurnment will be at Lone Tree Cemetery in Hayward. Donations are preferred to help the homeless of San Benito County c/o Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home, 363 7th St. Hollister, CA 95023
Ethel LaFaun Blackman
Ethel LaFaun “Babe” Blackman died Dec. 2, 2002 at Kaiser Santa Theresa Hospital. She was 92.
Mrs. Blackman graduated from the Hollister High School and worked at the San Benito County Courthouse until her marriage in 1942 to Ben Blackman, who preceded her in death. They lived in Concord.
She was a homemaker until her husband’s death in 1965, at which time she went to work for the Navy at the weapons depot in Martinez. She was a member of Fidelity Rebekah Lodge in Hollister and The Concord Chapter of The Ladies Auxiliary of WWI Veterans.
She is preceded by three grandsons, three great grandsons and two nephews.
Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno. Arrangements are through Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home.
