20, 2002 at her Delano home. She was 73.

Eleanor M. Viscarra, former MACE Woman of the Year, died Oct. 20, 2002 at her Delano home. She was 73.

Mrs. Viscarra lived in San Benito County for 54 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Teamsters Local 890 of Salinas, was present of the PTA when her children were in school, an active member of the Club DAMAS, which raises money for scholarships, a great cook and avid supporter of Sacred Heart Bingo. She was a cannery worker for 24 years with San Benito Foods.

Mrs. Viscarra is survived by her husband, Alfonso Viscarra of Hollister, children Annie Galmeister of Ione, Eva Ortiz of San Jose, Ruth Haro of Gilroy, Lorraine Hermosillo of Escondido, Christina Barrett of Hollister, Elisa Dalling of Vacaville, Alfonso Jr. of Morgan Hill, Lydia Casas of Hollister, Danny Viscarra of Gilroy, Teresa Viscarra of Hollister, Arthur Viscarra of Hollister, 25 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, siblings Herman Sotelo, Hortencia Chaigres, Ruben Sotelo, Alice Polanco, Irena Pena, Salvador Sotelo, Jessie Sotelo, Alma Sill and Mario Sotelo.

The funeral is today at 9:30 a.m., leaving Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home for a 10 a.m. mass at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Mariano A. Sagun

Mariano A. Sagun, a native of the Philippines who was a ranch foreman and cement plant worker during his long career, died Oct. 19, 2002 in San Jose. He was 101.

Mr. Sagun was a longtime resident of Hollister and San Juan Bautista. He attended Philippine Schools and was taught by nuns, joined the U.S. Army during WWII and was a member of the Filipino-American Community of San Benito County. He was also a member of the Fil Visayan Lodge, Sacred Heart Parish, and the American Legion Post of Hollister. He was a mill worker at the Ideal Cement Plant in San Juan Bautista for 25 years and was a foreman for the Holthouse Ranch in the Fallon Road area for many years. He loved new cars and would pay cash for each one. His family said he never wrote a check in his life. Mr. Sagun was an avid fisherman and maintained his home and garden in Hollister until last year, when he moved to San Jose.

He was preceded in death in 1989 by his wife, Magdalena H. Sagun, and is survived by his son Leon H. Sagun of Santa Maria, two grandsons, Frances Hernandez, his longtime caregiver, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Friday from noon until 8 p.m. at Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral home and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., when the family will leave for San Juan Mission for a 1 p.m. mass. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Liborio Ortiz

Liborio Ortiz died at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula on Oct. 21, 2002 after complications from a lengthy illness. He was 64.

Mr. Ortiz had lived in San Juan Bautista for about 15 years and worked for the Herbert Ranch. He was born in Michoacan, Mexico.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Ortiz of San Juan Bautista, his children, Leonardo Ortiz of Hollister, Jorge Ortiz of Hollister, Elvia Gamboa of Porterville, Erica Avila of San Juan Bautista, Ana Ortiz of San Juan Bautista and Veronica Ortiz of San Juan Bautista, his brothers and sisters, Joel Ortiz of Hollister, Amelia Jimenez of San Francisco, Samuel Ortiz of Umatilla, Ore., Andrea Madrigal of Umatilla, Adelina Jimenez of San Francisco, Adelmira Madrigal of San Francisco and Leonila Ortiz of Mexico. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and one great grandson.

Friends can pay their respects today from 3-9 p.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. The Rosary will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

The funeral is Friday at the funeral home chapel at 10:30 a.m., proceeding to Mission San Juan Bautista where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment and graveside services will follow the Mass at San Juan District Cemetery.

Margaret D. Martin

Margaret D. Martin, a former Hollister resident, died at her daughter’s home in San Diego on Oct. 20, 2002. She was 84.

Mrs. Martin had been a former resident of Hollister for many years and moved to be with her daughter. When in Hollister she was a member of Sacred Heart Church and The Catholic Daughters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Martin, and is survived by her daughter, Mary Martin of San Diego and her sister, Hazel Lucas of Salinas.

Friends can pay their respects today from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home, with a procession to Sacred Heart Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Interment and graveside services will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery.

Eleanor J. Lashley

Eleanor J. Lashley died Oct. 18 at Southside Convalescent Hospital. She was 88.

Mrs. Lashley had moved to Hollister in 1994 to be with her daughter and family from San Jose. She was born in Cherryvale, Kan.

She is survived by her daughter Pam Eisenman of Hollister and her three grandchildren.

Graveside services were Tuesday at Oak Hill Memorial Park in San Jose.

Frank S. Harvey

Frank S. Harvey died Friday at Northside Convalescent Hospital in Hollister. He was 87.

Mr. Harvey moved to Hollister in 1950 from Pennsylvania, his birthplace, where he owned and operated a dairy bar making and selling ice cream. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII. Prior to his retirement he was employed with the Free Lance Newspaper as a linotype operator. He was a member of Hollister United Methodist Church, Mound Lodge #166 IOOF and was a past Noble Grand, past District Deputy-Grand Master and served as the lodge’s chaplain presently. He was also a member of The Hollister Grange.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma, and is survived by his daughter, Aileen Harvey of Larkspur.

A memorial was Wednesday at The United Methodist Church. Rev. Ardyss Golden officiated with music by Jody Larson.

Arrangements and Cremation are through Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home and Gavilan Hills Crematory. Private family inurnment is planned off the coast of Monterey County. Donations are preferred to a favorite charity.

Ruth. T. Edington

Ruth T. Edington of Paicines, who worked for animal rights at the county and state level, died Oct. 12, 2002. She was 79.

Mrs. Edington was a self-employed bookkeeper for many years. She was born in Oklahoma and moved to San Benito County 20 years ago.

Mrs. Edington is survived by her daughter Leigh Edington.

As were her wishes, arrangements for private cremation and inurnment are through Grunnagle Ament Nelson Crematory. Donations are preferred to local animal shelters.

Pearl Gentry Cooper

Pearl Gentry Cooper died Oct. 20, 2002 at Southside Convalescent Hospital. She was 91.

Mrs. Cooper was born in Grapevine, Tex., moved to Alabama with her family when she was 4 and spent the remainder of her young life in the Mobile area. She graduated from nursing school as a practical nurse at the Pickets County Hospital and Blakney Nursing Home in Reform, Ala.,

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Cooper, and her son Jim. She is survived by children Barbara Johnson of Hollister, Wyatt Cooper of Georgia and Diane Viehman of Texas, 10 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The funeral and interment will be held in Reform.

Maria De Jesus Bueno

Maria de Jesus “Mi Chuy” Bueno died Oct. 18, 2002 at Hazel Hawkins Hospital. She was 97.

Mrs. Bueno was born in Jalisco, Mexico and attended Mexico schools. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, an original member of the Guadalupana Society, and an avid Bingo player. She loved to cook and spend time with her family. She was a homemaker for 82 years, but also had been a field worker, picking grapes and apricots throughout California in her early years.

Mrs. Bueno was preceded in death in 1985 by her husband, Pedro Bueno. She is survived by children Angelita DelReal, Manuel Bueno, Reyes Bueno and Antonio Bueno of Hollister. She was preceded in death by her children Maria Rico and Petra Gonzalez. She is also survived by 53 grandchildren, 106 great grandchildren, 50 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The funeral was Monday at Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home with interment at Calvary Cemetery.
