In an effort to save the county money, the San Benito County Parks and Recreation Commission during the board of supervisors meeting Tuesday will propose a contract with the California Department of Parks and Recreation, Hollister Hills State Vehicle recreation Area that will fund the commission $35,000 over the next year.

After the board directed the parks and recreation commission staff to look at ways to avoid a reduction in meeting frequency on Oct. 26, representatives from Hollister Hills proposed a collaborative effort between the two.

The agreement will allow the parks and recreation commission to continue holding meetings on the same frequency but also allow Hollister Hills to have a stronger community outreach, according to the staff report. With the funding, Hollister Hills would receive more collaborative planning and will hold stakeholder and community meetings in conjunction with the parks and recreation commission.

The funding will help the commission to “continue its efforts to implement the Parks and Recreation Facilities Master Plan, and assists Hollister Hills with planning support services,” according to the staff report.

The proposed agreement comes after some members of the board of supervisors have toured the area around Hollister Hills. The board was looking into ways to promote the recreational land to attract new tourists to the area.

Hollister Hills is exploring the idea of new recreational activities in the area, including hiking, biking and horseback riding. At this time, Hollister Hills is a popular destination for off-road vehicle enthusiasts.

The agreement would provide funding from the State of California’s parks department and it would be $35,000 until June 30, 2012. Funding is broken down into two periods. The commission would receive $11,000 from Jan. 25 to June 30 and an addition $24,000 from July 1 to June 30, 2012.

The proposal needs a four-fifths vote to be approved by the board.
