The fourth annual One Act Festival presented by The Western Stage at Hartnell College is the culmination of a theater class, which started Jan. 27 and will continue through May 3.

The class produces eight one-act plays, each of which provides opportunities for young directors, actors and technicians to hone their skill under the guidance of the Western Stage company’s experienced staff. All shows rehearse for four weeks and perform over one weekend.

The festival will also present a series of Readers Theater presentations at which the one-act directors and performers will give dramatic readings of shows from the first half of the upcoming TWS season.

The 2003 season includes “Prelude To A Kiss,” “Ah Wilderness!,” “Anton in Show Business” and “A Doll’s House.” The readings and the plays will be held in the Studio Theater at Hartnell College and are open to the public. Readings will be held March 22, April 5 and 19 and May 3 at 8 p.m.

This Western Stage community outreach program is intended to provide another venue for artists and audience members orphaned by the current economic climate, which is shutting down so many theater programs elsewhere.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. in the Studio Theater on the Hartnell College campus at 156 Homestead Ave. in Salinas. Admission is free, but reservations are advised by calling (831) 755-6990. All

donations will be used to improve the program and the theater.
