Letter: Aquatics rep dives in on pool issue

I would like to provide some additional information to the school board meeting agenda item relating to the need for a new pool. I have been working with a group of parents to provide a solution to replace the only public aquatic facility in the county.

Letter: Former mayoral candidate ponders issues

I want to bring a lot of different things to the people’s attention. I feel the people of the community should be aware and know what goes on in their city. I myself would like to know what does the police department and county sheriff’s department do with the entire surplus of property they obtain in their possession.  Eventually no one claims them, and then they stay in the city or county’s possession. What happens to them then? It is in their inventory, the property room. I buy from property room all the time, and this certainly does work. Where is all the money at that they make of this unclaimed property? They cannot lie about that.

Guest View: Vaccinations protect the community

Chickenpox. Hepatitis A and B. Measles. Polio. Tetanus. Whooping cough (or pertussis). What do they have in common? They are all vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). That means all of these diseases can be prevented with vaccines. No one has to suffer—or die—from them. We have safe, effective vaccines that have swept these diseases into the public-health waste bin in many parts of the world.

Letter: Cricket near Hollister?

Each week in the Free Lance, we read about various sporting events but we Anglophiles sometimes miss a taste of British sports. Eureka! Right in or own back yard, cricket in Gilroy!

Letter: Pothole nonsense

Regarding the Assemblyman’s ideas for “fixing potholes,” what utter nonsense. If the Legislature would just privatize transit, or make transit riders pay for the cost of their transit, then motorists, truckers and motorcyclists would have no potholes to endure.

Guest View: Voters must take hold of their future

It is time for the community to begin the work to get what it wants. For example, swimming pools at the high school so that our students get what they need and all San Benito residents have a recreational amenity to use.

Letter: Teacher adds to story on late Hearn

I just wanted to add a little to your story about the passing of Mr. Greg Hearn. I came to San Benito High School in 1986, at 22 years old with very little experience and he took a chance on me, like he did with many other teachers over the years. But what separated him was the fact that he also provided the support for all of us to grow as teachers, and more importantly as people.

Guest View: Prep experts ask, are you ready?

When we think about how to be prepared for a disaster, we, of course, think mostly about earthquakes. After all, San Benito County does sit on top of the San Andreas and Calaveras faults. Most of us clearly remember the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and how it affected our communities and our families. We worry about when the next big one will hit and how we can be better prepared for it.

Guest View: Our homeless shelter program needs a timeout

Our plans for a homeless shelter showed some serious disconnects during the last meeting of the San Benito County Board of Supervisors. If those problems are not identified, attacked, and solved before we make major, irrevocable, decisions we risk taking too much time, spending too much money for what we get, and ending up with an ineffective program. We need a timeout a new attitude to get it right.
