Letter: Props to those who give back

Because of the activities of one of my children, I have been blessed this week to see three local community members who have really gone above and beyond the call of duty in running some programs that are helping many youth in our community thrive, and  I feel it necessary to give them some public props.

Guest View: Auditors must eye Gavilan bond spending

After reading the article in the Free Lance dated Dec. 10 about the groundbreaking at the Coyote Valley site and the use of bond funds to set up the police academy, it raised an interesting question.

Guest View: In response to history, US recalls FDR dimes

Since they were first minted in 1946 to honor Franklin Delano Roosevelt, four-time elected president of the United States from 1933 until his death in office in 1945, the nation has produced more than 90 billion iconic dimes (10-cent pieces) bearing his likeness.

Guest View: Rally business approach seriously lacking

The City of Hollister is once again searching for a promoter for its signature Fourth of July motorcycle rally and each time that happens it means starting all over rather than improving on previous events. There has to be a fundamental reason the rally cannot sustain a good promoter, which is a key element for success. My review of the concept and implementation indicates that the city and rally supporters have not taken an in-depth business approach to the event.

Letter: Thankful during the holidays

I would like to share my gratitude this Thanksgiving with a few people that truly deserve huge Thank You: Hazel Hawkins Northside Skilled Nursing Facility, Corrine Porteur and her staff doing an amazing job.

Guest View: A day for philanthropy

On Thursday, Nov. 12, on the occasion of our Community Foundation for San Benito County sponsored National Philanthropy Day, and whose venue was San Juan Oaks, I sat at the head of a beautifully appointed table.

Guest View: Thankful for a great holiday

It’s Thanksgiving again and it’s still my favorite holiday because it’s a four-day weekend for lots of working stiffs, there’s no gift-giving pressure, minor family disputes are put on hold, a couple of football games are on TV and it’s acceptable—no, it’s expected—that you’ll eat yourself into a stupor. What’s bad about any of that?

Guest View: SBHS athletic fixes are warranted

After reading the editorial entitled “Betrayed by the bond” I wanted to clear up some of the Community Insight Board’s claims. My first question is who is the “Insight Board”and have they ever set foot on the SBHS campus?

Guest View: Reader claims trustees spurned candidate

Two weeks ago, the Hollister School District appointed an individual to its board of trustees to fill a vacancy. One of the four candidates applying for the position ran for school board in the 2014 election and although she did not win, she did very well. With her application, this candidate provided multiple letters of reference from community groups. Someone gave an eloquent speech on her behalf. There were several members of the public, parents, present at the meeting with signs supporting the candidate.

Letter: Feedback is crucial

Here’s my view on what the people of the city have been pointing out to me on what is wrong with the city and community. It needs change and they want change. Will the city ever be able to regain the trust from the citizens? There is no trust.
