Our first Red Phone call of the week came from a local woman fed up with the weeds across the street from Target that make a quick jaunt down the sidewalk more like an expedition through uncharted areas of the jungle. She asked the Crimson Crusader to make the sure the problem was addressed.

The Crimson Crusader made a quick call to Ray Rojas at the Hollister Public Works Department. Rojas, a man of swift action, deployed a reconnaissance detail to scope out the problem Tuesday afternoon. Rojas said the weed problem, located near Hillock Street and the surrounding area, was mostly private land. Although the city can’t cut down weeds on private property, Rojas said he would pass on the location and weed problem to the Hollister Fire Department or the Code Enforcement office. Both of those agencies can spur the private land owner into action and make sure the weeds get taken down a notch.

Paying jail a visit

Our next Red Phone caller of the week, confused about visiting procedures at the San Benito County Jail, asked the Crimson Crusader for some clarification. The Crimson Crusader made a quick call over to Robert Sanchez, a corrections officer and administrator at the jail, to get some answers.

Sanchez said jail inmates are entitled to one hour of visitation each week. Visitation is done by appointment only, Sanchez said. In order to set up a visitation appointment, call Sanchez at 636-4123. Appointments can be made from 8-10am Monday through Thursday. Sanchez also said visitors should bring a photo ID with them when they visit. And don’t bake a cake the night before, because you won’t be able to bring food items, cell phones or other contraband into the visiting area.

Manhole update

Feeling a bit lonely after receiving only two Red Phone calls this week, the Crimson Crusader took some time to check on past problems to make sure they were fixed.

Top on the list was a local homeowner who called a few weeks back regarding a noisy, rattling manhole cover in front of her home. The Crimson Crusader made a call to Utility Technician Jim Hart with the city’s Public Works Department to find out if the rattling cover had been fixed. Hart said he had ordered a specially-designed rubber gasket to dampen the noise of the rattling cover. Hart said the gasket had been installed last week. A dedicated civil servant, Hart asked the homeowner for feedback. So, faithful Red Phone caller, give him a call and let him know if the racket has subsided.

All residents with sewer questions and concerns can call 636-4377 to report their problems, Hart said. However, if the question is in regards to last month’s bill, direct communications to the Finance Department at 636-4301.
