The David and Lucile Packard Foundation has agreed to give a $600,000 grant to San Benito County’s Community Foundation to help the local nonprofit and others grow in the community.

The board on Friday for the Los Altos-based philanthropic group agreed to the grant application. The Packard Foundation as a whole allocates hundreds of millions of dollars annually to help such groups do positive, charitable work.

Community Foundation Executive Director Gary Byrne told the Free Lance he hopes it leads to a long-term relationship with Packard as well as opportunities with other grant-funding foundations by “leveraging, in a good way, their name.”

He said the grant has three purposes: to give $250,000 toward re-granting to other San Benito County nonprofit groups, help Community Foundation build its capacity and educate other local organizations on methods to build theirs as well.

“They are using Community Foundation as their conduits in the community,” Byrne said.

With the additional re-granting funds, Byrne estimated Community Foundation would allocate about $400,000 next year to area groups.
