Overlay work was set to start on various sections of two county roads this week with the use of $400,000 in funds from the federal stimulus, according to the San Benito County Public Works Department.

A contractor was scheduled to start work on portions of Fairview and Union roads. It will round out the first slate of $1.2 million to the county public works department from the federal stimulus, said public works official Arman Nazemi. Already finished earlier this month was an overlay to 4.5 miles of Southside Road costing $850,000 with stimulus funds, he said.

Weather permitting, Redwood City-based Archibald Paving, Inc., was set to do the work. The same company won the bid for the Southside Road paving project, too, Nazemi said. The firm has until May 14 to get it done, but Nazemi estimated it could be finished within a couple of weeks. Crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the roads.

On Fairview Road, the three locations are at Airline Highway, McCloskey Road and Spring Grove Road, Nazemi said. On Union Road, the work is set for an area near the San Juan Oaks Golf Club entrance, at the Hollister Ranch Estates and at Union Heights Drive, he said.

The bids from Archibald came to $183,750 for the Fairview Road portions and $119,200 for the Union Road sections. The rest of the funds from the stimulus approved in February 2009 will go toward administration and inspection, he said.

Nazemi noted how drivers should plan for a 10-minute delay or find another route.
