Air Force Airman Leonard J. Silva Jr. graduated from basic
military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio,
Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that
included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force
core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and
skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an
associate in applied science degree through the Community College
of the Air Force.
He is the son of Leonard and Santa Silva of Line St.,
Hollister.
Silva graduated in 2007 from San Benito High School and received
an associate degree in 2009 from California Culinary Academy, San
Francisco.

Police group awards scholarship

San Benito High School graduate Vanessa Casalegno is among 16 top students who will receive $1,000 college scholarships to encourage their pursuit of law enforcement/public safety careers by the professional public safety officers of the Law Enforcement Education Program.

Earning honors in the 2010 LEEP Dream Scholarship program were Casalegno, Vinnie Romo, of Pico Rivera; Cassia Fernandes, of San Bernadino; Zachary Gillmore, of Brawley; and Hayley Sa, of Livermore.

Graduating among the top 10 students in her class, Casalegno plans to attend Santa Clara University and use the scholarship toward a career in the FBI.

“Vanessa has been a huge asset to our school and community, being involved in sports, clubs and various leadership and community activities,” wrote English teacher Patrick Schleeter, in a recommendation letter.

Casalegno has been involved in many sports and organizations at SBHS and achieved a 4.25 grade-point average. She received such award as the Scholar Athlete School Award and the Scholar Athlete Basketball Award. She has served in St. Benedict’s Catholic Church youth group and volunteers with the LA Congress and the Community Food Bank.

FFA students win at state fair

Hollister Future Farmers of America members Erica and Hannah Bianchi were winners in the junior breeding beef competition at the recently-completed California State Fair in Sacramento.

Erica Bianchi, vice president of the Hollister Future Farmers of America, was honored in the following categories: supreme champion cow-calf; champion cow-calf; and reserve champion bull.

Hannah Bianchi won for reserve senior champion female.
