Women’s Club awards art students
Women’s Club of Hollister recently held its annual student art
contest. The first place winners at the club level competed at the
district and went on to the California Federation of Women’s Club
contest in Los Angeles. Local winners were all from San Benito High
School. Andrea Masey, a freshman, was awarded third place. Crystal
Mendoza was awarded first place for Special Education. Graduating
senior Arielle Ogas earned first place and a $500 scholarship. The
Women’s Club has been in San Benito County for 96 years and its
members are still volunteering in the community and promoting
education, awareness, and making a difference.

4-H scholarships given out

The San Benito 4-H council sponsors college scholarships for graduating 4-H High School seniors each year.

Mark Tobias, of Ausaymas 4-H, received the Georgia Wapple Frazer 4-H Memorial Scholarship of $4,000.

Adrian Rodriguez, of Sunnyslope 4-H, received the John W. Ricotti 4-H Memorial Scholarship of $1,000.

Erik Rodriguez, of Sunnyslope F-H, received the 4-H Memorial Scholarship of $1,000.

The recipients were recognized by 4-H council president Nick Peters at the San Benito High School Awards Ceremony May 19.

Ladd Lane students are poets – and they know it

Creative Communications Publishing Company notified 43 Ladd Lane students in third, fourth and fifth grades that their poems were selected for publication in the 2009 anthology “A Celebration of Poets.”

The poems were submitted as entries in the annual contest, open to students nationwide. Ladd Lane School also received the Creative Communication’s Poetic Achievement Award for spring 2009. The award is given to schools with student entries of exceptionally high merit. Ladd Lane School students receivedd the award last year, as well.

Nationwide, 50 percent of the entries submitted are selected for publication. Ladd Lane students participated in a poetry class designed for students in the Gifted and Talented Education program (GATE), and students with a special interest in creative writing. Lynn Parsons taught the class both years.
