Student accepted into People to People

HOLLISTER – Caroline Gutierrez has been accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum. She will join a group of students in Washington, D.C., March 3 through March 9. She will earn high school credit while studying leadership and exploring some of the United States’ most prominent monuments and institutions.

Students are selected based on scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential. She is the Spring Grove Associated Student Body president and was recently honored by San Benito High School ASB for scholastic achievement.

The students, including Gutierrez, will visit Capitol Hill, the Smithsonian, Colonial Williamsburg and the National Museum of American History. President Dwight D. Eisenhower developed the People to People program in 1956.

The following is Parker’s essay:

“Why I Am An American Patriot” By Connor Parker

I am an American patriot in many ways. A patriot is someone who is loyal to his country, who loves his country and is willing to fight for it and die for his country if necessary. I am an American patriot because I love my country. I am a patriot because of the values that I have and live by, the activities that I do, and what I plan to do in the future. I will explain why these things make me a patriot in the next few paragraphs.

The first reason why I am an American patriot is the set of values that I have and live by. I have been brought up with many old values, to do my best in school, to do the work and turn it in on time, and to always do my best at extra curriculum.

I try to do my best at sports and other activities. My family mottos are “If a job is worth doing it’s worth doing well,” and “Your word is your bond.” A patriot is honorable and always keeps his promises.

Another reason wy I am an American patriot is the activities that I do. A patriot is judged by the things that he does. When I was younger I was in the Boy Scouts. Almost every morning I hang an American flag in our front yard and I bring it inside when it gets dark. I run in a race on the Fourth of July. I go to the cemetery that I live by on Memorial and Veterans Day to pay my respects to soldiers buried there.

The last reason why I am an American patriot is what I plan to do in the future. I plan to get an education so that I will understand more on what goes on in the world. Being educated will make me a good citizen.

I also plan to be ready to help my country provide leadership for the world if the nations of the world need it. That is the final reason why I am a patriot. Those are the reasons why I am an American patriot. I am proud of being an American patriot.
