Hollister – More than 5,300 customers in the eastern area of Hollister lost power Monday morning, but power was restored to everyone within less than two hours, according to a Pacific Gas and Electric spokesman.

PG&E spokesman Jeff Smith said the outage was caused by equipment failure in a transformer on Sally Street.

The outage occurred at 9:48am Monday, affecting 5,394 houses in the Sunnyslope neighborhood and surrounding areas. By 9:50am, power had been restored to 1,482 of those customers, and all power was restored by 11:22am, Smith said.

“We were able to restore power to customers by rerouting power through other circuits,” Smith said.

Sunnyslope School, on Memorial Drive, lost power for around two hours, said Principal Melinda Scott.

This was one of the longest power outages affecting the school in recent history, Scott said. But she said despite the inconvenience, school operated fairly routinely without power.

“We tried to conduct business as usual,” Scott said. “It wasn’t very disruptive at all.”

The students weren’t allowed in the computer lab, and teachers had to be notified individually for breaks because the bells weren’t working. Beyond that teachers handled the outage “very well,” Scott said.

PG&E crews were sent to repair the transformer on Sally Street Monday afternoon, Scott said.
