Pinnacles National Monument could be closed this weekend if there is a shutdown to the federal government.

Other regional parks or monuments such as Muir Woods, Alcatraz Island and the Point Reyes National Seashore could be shuttered as well starting this weekend if the federal government is forced to shut down because of a budget quagmire.

A Friday night deadline looms and if the federal budget is unresolved, Bay Area national parks and lands would close offices and other services as workers are forced to go on furloughs.

“We still believe that there is the opportunity for Congress to avoid a government shutdown, but we are working to prepare for all possible scenarios,” said John Dell’Osso, chief of interpretation at the Point Reyes National Seashore.

The impact would be wide ranging. Visitor activities that require a permit, including public events, would not be allowed or would be canceled or postponed. Visitor centers would be closed. Muir Woods, for instance, would shut down entirely.

Additionally, visitors using overnight concession accommodations and campgrounds would be forced to make alternate arrangements, officials said.

Limited personnel needed to protect life and property on public lands, such as law enforcement, emergency services and firefighting personnel, would be exempted from furlough. Administrative offices would be closed and general business would be curtailed.

The effect would be felt across the country.

“Visitor centers will be closed and access to park areas denied, including the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Independence Hall, Alcatraz, and the Washington Monument,” said Kendra Barkoff, spokeswoman for the Department of the Interior.
