Hollister police officers were led on a high-speed chase and a foot chase Sunday by Humberto Gomez Sanchez, 31, of Hollister.
Police received reports that Sanchez, a wanted parolee, was in the area of Ranchito Court at 12:30 p.m. driving a Jetta, said department spokeswoman Officer Rosie Betanio. Officers observed a vehicle matching the description backing out of a driveway. The vehicle then left the Mission Oaks Mobile Home Park and crossed over to the Hollister Super parking lot.
Police followed and made a positive ID. Officers activated their lights and then, when Sanchez failed to yield, activated their sirens. Sanchez’s vehicle quickly reached speeds of up to 90 mph. Officers reported that they did not exceed that speed for safety’s sake.
The man continued driving recklessly at high speeds, running stop signs on Miller Road and Ranchito Drive, and narrowly missing a bicyclist at one point, police said.
At Bridge and Valonia roads, Sanchez crashed into a tree, according to reports. He left the vehicle and ran, jumping a nearby fence into a backyard of a Ranchito Drive home. Sanchez hopped other fences while attempting to evade police while other officers called for backup.
Residents of the area emerged from homes advising law enforcement as to the suspect’s location. Police then began backyard searches and they soon located the suspect crouched beside a fence.
