San Benito County Public Defender Greg LaForge returned this week from getting sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts as a member of the U.S. Supreme Court’s bar association whose members are eligible to argue cases before the country’s highest judicial body.

LaForge was sworn in Monday in Washington, D.C., along with many other attorneys throughout the country. He noted how new applicants have to be sponsored by two other Supreme Court bar members. Retired Judge Thomas Breen and Judge Steven Sanders sponsored LaForge, he said. He believes there are a total of four Supreme Court bar members, including himself, in San Benito County.

“It’s just something I wanted to do,” said LaForge, noting that nothing specifically prompted his pursuit of admission.

At the swearing in, new members were announced by name according to the states in which they practice.

LaForge also pointed out new members must have no disciplinary action against them and they must be a “member in good standing” in their home states.
