After a long summer of festivals, farmers markets and community gatherings, the lawn at Fourth and San Benito streets in downtown Hollister was looking a little tired.
“With the rally, regular users, the farmers market, it gets a lot of wear and tear,” said Marcelo Orta, Hollister parks supervisor.
“Turf is not really meant to have any vehicles on it, and heat from the barbecues burns the lawn,” Orta explained “It wasn’t growing back any more, so it was time. It’s a nice area.”
City crews went to work last Friday to lay down a lush layer of fresh turf. Two of the workers assigned to the project are new additions to the parks maintenance crew, financed through the Measure T sales tax voters approved last November.
The grass itself was funded through the Hollister Redevelopment Agency.
City crews were back downtown this week pruning street trees.
“We’re trying to do the crape myrtles,” Orta said. “We had an incident where the kids were hanging from the lower branches and breaking them off, so we’re trying to beat them at their own game.”
