Reach for the sky, rodents! You’ve met your match.

A recent edition of “Public Works” indicated that gophers were proliferating at Dunne Park, a downtown Hollister oasis of greenery far from what would appear to be gophers’ usual haunts.

The party is about to end.

City parks supervisor Marcelo Orta said gophers have become an unusually persistent problem at several city parks in recent months, but particularly at Dunne Park.

Orta last week entered into negotiations with Gavilan Pest Control, a Hollister business, and hopes to have a contract for local parks completed soon.

Gavilan already has been doing work for a local school district, with encouraging results.

Orta said that, because parks are frequented by children and pets, controlling pests such as gophers safely is a very specialized job.

The city also is moving ahead with plans to ensure the problem does not surface at a new 50-acre park area going in near the west end of the San Juan Road Bridge.

“The old company just wasn’t doing the job so it was time to move along,” Orta said.
