Veterans Park needs some shine
Veterans Memorial Park is a busy scene many afternoons. It is home to baseball fields, basketball courts and the only official skate park in town.
The Hollister Skate Park was voted best place to shred in San Benito County – probably by people who’d rather not see them downtown – and it is the best place for kids to skate where they won’t cause property damage. But the park could use a little maintenance.
The Hollister Skate Park, located at Veterans Memorial Park has a fence around the cement bowls that are perfect for skateboarding or bicycle tricks. But the fence surrounding the park has been torn open in places. There are holes along most sides of the perimeter and on at least one side, the hole is large enough for a person to climb through into the park. The cement bowls are pocked with graffiti.
In addition, the basketball courts have cracks and uneven pavement. The court lines are so faded they are near invisible.
The park is unique in that parts of it fall within the jurisdiction of the city while other parts are the property of the county. In addition the Veterans Memorial Park Commission also has say over what happens at the park. If all the agencies work together they would easily be able to improve the safety of the park and the sports complexes on site.
