Bypass speed-limit bump goes into effect
If you haven’t noticed the new signs of the cars zipping by you on the bypass, the long-awaited increase to the speed limit on the Highway 25 bypass has gone into effect.
Since the bypass opened in February, the speed limit had been posted at 35 mph along most of the 2.4-mile roadway. After Council of San Benito County Governments conducted a speed survey requesting new speed limits, the Hollister City Council and San Benito County Board of Supervisors each approved of the change, for which residents had been clamoring for months.
The signs are up and the limit officially is changed to 55 mph between San Felipe and Santa Ana roads. And then from Santa Ana south to Sunnyslope, the engineering analysis determined that the speed should be 45 mph, as it crosses through school zones.
The new road was completed earlier this year after years of planning. COG officials initially had established the lower speed limit to align with state standards for the road’s designation.
