If you’re among the locals wondering when the bypass might get a nice sprucing up, don’t hold your breath because the allocation was removed from the project’s budget about a decade ago and there’s no money lying around to get the work done.

The 2.4-mile bypass project completed in February looks sort of like a subdivision in infancy stages that doesn’t yet have any landscaping surrounding the homes. It’s nice and all to have a new road, but it’s not the most welcoming look in the world. Of course, we take what we can get.

Mary Dinkuhn at the Council of San Benito County Governments noted how the landscaping work will depend on finding a funding source that isn’t currently available. She pointed out that crews did, in fact, install the necessary irrigation and other infrastructure to maintain the landscaping once it goes in. She said the jurisdiction for the work could fall with the state, once it takes over the highway in another year or so, or local governments.
