The weeds march on
Hollister’s newest park opened less than two years ago under the
practical but not-so creative moniker of Southeast Hollister Park.
Since then, it’s undergone a name change that better describes its
location and its vista
– Valley View Park.
The park is located near the south end of Valley View Road, next
to a farm producing a variety of row crops. And therein lies the
problem.

Hollister’s newest park opened less than two years ago under the practical but not-so creative moniker of Southeast Hollister Park. Since then, it’s undergone a name change that better describes its location and its vista – Valley View Park.
The park is located near the south end of Valley View Road, next to a farm producing a variety of row crops. And therein lies the problem.
Weeds at the edges of the field quickly colonized the parks landscaping, and have grown into a blossoming eyesore that threatens to overwhelm plantings.
The park, like others inside Hollister, is a victim of a sharply reduced park maintenance department. Staff is hoping that the Measure T sales tax measure that took effect April 1 will eventually mean that additional parks staff will be hired.
Until then, parks such as Valley View are crying for some citizen involvement. One local landscaper approached the city about sponsoring maintenance of another park, in exchange for being able to post a sign indicating the work was a donation. While that’s being looked into, park visitors might consider packing a pair of work gloves along with the Frisbee.
To inquire about lending a hand, people may contact parks supervisor Marcelo Orta at 636-4370.
