Officials from the 33rd Gilroy Garlic Festival are accepting recipe submissions for the Great Garlic Cook-Off now through May 1, according to a festival news release.

The event is scheduled for July 30, the second day of the annual three-day Gilroy Garlic Festival.

Recipes must included a minimum of six cloves of fresh garlic or three teaspoons of minced or chopped garlic.

Margee Berry of Trout Lake, Wash., and her champion watermelon crab meat-kissed soup were winners of last year’s event.

The 2010 Great Garlic Cook-Off was the first to feature the festival’s expanded Cook-Off Theater, which included expanded seating and two Jumbotron video screens.

Eight finalists from this year’s initial field of entries will be picked to appear on stage at the Cook-Off to prepare their dishes in front of festival crowds. Dishes must be prepared and presented to a six-judge panel within two hours, according to the release.

All eight finalists will receive lodging and travel accommodations. The Cook-Off champion will win $1,000 and a ceremonial garlic crown. The runner-up will earn $750, while the third place winner will take home $500.

Recipe entries can be submitted to the Gilroy Garlic Festival Cook-Off, at P.O. Box 2311, Gilroy, CA, 95021, or via e-mail at

. Submissions should be provided in recipe form and accompanied by a photo of the final dish.
