Keep green with holiday waste

During the week of Christmas and New Year’s, local garbage and recycling collection will be delayed by one day for customers whose normal pick-up day is Thursday or Friday.

Norcal Waste Collection Systems of San Benito County announced that service on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 25 and 26 and Thursday and Friday, Jan. 1 and 2 will be pushed back one day because of the holidays. The normal Thursday pick-up will be held on Friday and Friday’s normal service date will be on Saturday.

During those weeks, customers whose normal garbage pick-up day is Monday through Wednesday will not experience a change in service.

Norcal Waste reminds its customers that during the holidays, there is much more paper waste generated than during other times of the year. Reuse of wrapping paper is encouraged as is recycling. Wrapping paper with tape is recyclable, as is tissue wrapping paper. Foils wrapping paper is not recyclable, nor are ribbons and bows – though Norcal reminds that they are reusable.

Christmas tree recycling will again be offered by local Boy Scouts in Hollister and San Juan Bautista on Sunday, Dec. 28; Saturday, Jan. 3; and Sunday, Jan. 4. Trees need to be on the curb by 9 a.m. on those dates and donations of $7 are encouraged to help support local scouting activities as well as the Gerry Rawn Endowment Fund. More information on the recycling program is available by calling 638-9646.

Norcal Waste will also pick up trees for recycling on garbage and recycling collection days between Jan. 2 and 23.

The company asks that trees be cut into three-foot sections when placed curbside for recycling and that all decorations, tinsel and stands be removed. Flocked trees are recyclable.

In its winter newsletter, Norcal Waste points out that more than one million tons of additional garbage is generated nationwide each week during the holiday season. The company suggests the following ways to reduce both the amount of garbage generated and money spent:

– Give a donation in someone’s name.

– Make homemade gifts, such as baked treats.

– Give gift certificates.

– Buy gifts made of recycled materials.

Artificial trees without lights or decorations can also be recycled this year by donating them to the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center (WERC) in Morgan Hill. The trees will be used to provide habitat and privacy for the animals at the center.

For more details on donating to WERC, call 408-779-9372 or e-mail
