Volunteers worked from emergency response vehicle
Volunteers from the American Red Cross San Benito office, which is part of the Monterey Bay Area Chapter, responded to the fire at the Eagle Recycling plant with canteening service to the firefighters Aug. 3.
“We rolled our ERV (emergency response vehicle) at around 7 p.m. after the fire captain at the scene determined it was safe for us to be there,” said Howard Evans, the American Red Cross emergency services co-chair for San Benito, in a press release. “We sent two local volunteers with the ERV with water and snacks. After we were setup, two others began calling for food donations to all the local restaurants.”
Volunteer included Michael Brennan, Richard Poccinelli, Brad Klemek, David Guttirez, Cindy Snow and Evans. Three of the volunteers stayed at the scene all night until they were relieved by a crew of volunteers from Santa Cruz in the morning.
The Red Cross volunteers stayed on the scened until 3 p.m. Wednesday, at which time the fire captain on scene released the volunteers.
Local restaurants that donated food that evening included Round Table Pizza, Domino’s Pizza and Togo’s.
Later that night, Safeway donated several dozen donuts, milk and orange juice. Breakfast was provided by Taco Bell and Jerry’s Restaurant.
Lunch on Wednesday was provided by Safeway and Subway. Water was supplied by the Santa Cruz Red Cross Chapter.
“We want to thank our partner Santa Cruz Chapter for all of their hard work in assisting the Hollister office volunteers,” Evans said. “We at the Hollister office are proud that we are all volunteers and we are here to serve the community during any emergency. We also want to thank all of the local restaurants that stepped up and donated food to the firefighters so that all they had to do was fight the fire.”
