A fair to promote safety awareness will be held Saturday, June 7 with several organizations and agencies from San Benito County on the lawn outside the Briggs Building, Fourth and San Benito streets, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The San Benito County Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Hollister Fire Department are among groups putting on the “Together We Prepare Fair” to enhance public knowledge of how to react during emergency situations.
The idea stems from the national Red Cross “Together We Prepare” campaign launched in February – a five-step plan to deal with “emerging threats and disasters,” according to a press release from the organization.
This is first year of the local fair.
“The board (of directors) decided last fall to make a goal to have every family prepared and for this to be the safest community in the state of California,” said Kathryn Engelhard, executive director of the county Red Cross chapter.
The fair will cover issues such as coping with trauma, how to make a family disaster plan, preparing homes for emergencies and power outages.
Several other agencies will be present, including the San Benito County Child Care Linkages, the county’s Animal Control and Santa Cruz Red Cross Disaster Mental Health volunteers.
Engelhard said there will be several tables on the lawn. Presentations will be made, including one by the HFD about making an emergency plan and another by Animal Control about pets and disasters.
“Whenever there’s a disaster, and no matter what level, if you have pets they’re involved,” Engelhard said.
Anyone interested in volunteering at the event should call Veronica Martinez at the Red Cross office at 636-2100.
