Wednesday morning means Red Phone and the calls have been coming fast. This week: still some grumbling over the change in comics carried by the Free Lance, a caller angry local schools keep their fields locked up and a resident wants to know why there were no Hollister churches listed in last week’s directory. Always listening, always online, always available at 635-9219.
Bring back the funnies
The saga continues from readers despondent over changes to the Free Lance comics page.
“I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who objects to you taking out Zits, Belvedere and Tiger,” the caller said. “I would love it if you return them. They are far better than the things you replaced them with.”
Free San Benito High
Another caller wants access to San Benito High School’s fields.
“I’ve got a complaint about the fact that the high school doesn’t open its fields for use after school,” he told Red Phone. “Now, San Justo does and I was out there the other day and there must have been close to 100 people out there. It was pretty crowded. I wanted to jog around the track but there were people all over the place. I think if some of the other schools opened up they would get used. It’s important for the community. Did our tax dollars not pay for this and shouldn’t we be allowed to enjoy it after school?”
Indeed your tax dollars did, in one form or another, pay for it, just as your tax dollars would “pay” to fix any vandalism or misuse of school property which is why SBHS closed its campus to begin with. In a prior Red Phone interview, SBHS Director of Finance and Operations Steve Delay said the school is working with the city of Hollister to build a public use area on school grounds. Want change? Red Phone suggests taking the matter up with the school board by calling 831-637-5831.
The devil made us do it
The last Red Phone caller demands to know why no Hollister churches were listed in the new church directory last week.
“I thought this was a Hollister paper,” she told Red Phone. “Why did you have Gilroy, San Martin and Morgan Hill churches listed but not a single church in Hollister was listed in Friday’s paper. Goodbye.”
True, there were no church services in last week’s church directory and Free Lance editors want to change that, but they need your help. Send church service information to life styles editor Colleen Valles at

or fax it to 408-842-2206, Attn: Church Directory. Send’em and we’ll print’em – promise.
