Red Phone gets into leather

The Red Phone followed up on an issue in Wednesday’s space over whether girls under 18 had performed in the Ladies of Leather show, put on by the Boutique de Lingerie, at the Independence Rally.

We confirmed that one of the girls was 17 years old, but the girl’s mother had signed a permission form, and the girl in question, according to the boutique, has been modeling professionally for years.

Since parental permission was granted, and considering that Brooke Shields was playing a prostitute in the movies at the age of 13, the only issue here is whether a HIRC policy was violated.

For that Red Phone turned to John Loyd, the HIRC director in charge of the entertainment, to see if that was the case. John sent a thoughtful response, the salient part of which we would like to share with you:

“The quick answer to your question is that no Hollister Independence Rally Committee (HIRC) policy was violated. The only entertainment event that the rally directly operates which has an age requirement is the Miss Hollister Rally Pageant. The age limit is 21, mainly because the preliminary event often occurs in the bar section of The Vault or the bowling alley.

“I believe that it is a parent’s responsibility to act in the best interest of their child(ren), and the parent of the 17-year-old gave her daughter, who is a professional model, permission to participate in the show.

“Still, I am personally uncomfortable with the fact that a 17-year-old participated in the show … even with her mother’s permission. I will share your caller’s concern with my fellow directors. We will be meeting in August.”

Perhaps this has

happened to you:

We were contacted by an angry Highway 25 commuter who was tired of her car getting sprinkled with hard water from the fields being irrigated along the highway.

“Why doesn’t someone tell them that they either need to turn the water down or else cap all the end sprinklers so that they are not WASTING water and watering the highway and all the vehicles that travel on it. I’d love to send them a bill for having to wash my vehicle to remove the hard water spots.”

She would like to know who to call to complain to, and we have the answer.

But first, we are assured that the farmers are on your side on this one. They don’t want to be wasting water, and there are all kinds of reasons why this could be happening, including sprinkler malfunctions and vandalism.

So if it happens to you, do your best to note the location, then call Nancy Griffin, the executive director of the San Benito County Farm Bureau, at (831) 637-7999. She’ll do what she can to get the problem taken care of.

If you’re at wit’s end and need help, we’ll do our best. Call the Red Phone at 635-9219.

The Red Phone column runs twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the Free Lance.
