Cancer survivors release pigeons at the start of the walk during the Relay for Life at the San Benito High School football field in 2012.

Hollister’s Relay for Life event is in its 18th year and is set to host a kickoff gathering next week to inform residents on all they need to know for team sign-ups and other details.
“Having the kick-off is a way to generate excitement and interest,” said Chuck Obeso-Bradley, a cancer survivor and key organizer for the local Relay.
Hollister’s Relay for Life is set for July 29 and July 30 with the traditional 24-hour walk and fundraising activities that accompany it. Last year, local teams raised nearly $100,000. The local event has raised more than $1 million over the years, Obeso-Bradley said.
“A lot of teams do fundraising throughout the year,” he said. “We try to make it a year-round fundraising thing.”
The kickoff for the American Cancer Society fundraiser is set for 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 in the meeting room at Paine’s Restaurant. It will include refreshments and appetizers and a presentation from local cancer survivors.
There, organizers can walk locals through the process of starting a team, which is done online.
Paine’s is providing space and appetizers, and also allows the local Relay organizers to use the meeting room once a month for regular gatherings among team captains. Those are every third Tuesday of the month from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
