There was enough evidence of Barnes’ natural ability and bull-riding blood at the locals-only rodeo last weekend, where the Hollister native and Redding resident returned to the Bolado Park chutes — or any chutes, for that matter — for the first time in five years, and won.
“I didn’t show up to lose,” said Barnes, who formerly competed in the PRCA and the PBR before suffering a broken elbow in 2006 in Bakersfield — his last rodeo until this past weekend’s Saddle Horse Show.
Winning the bull-riding competition with qualifying scores of 64 and 65 during the first two go-rounds on Friday and Saturday, respectively, Barnes showed off his bull-riding skill as the only rider to stay on for eight seconds the first two days, making Sunday’s go-round a bit of a moot point.
“When you get kids and a family, it’s pretty hard to travel,” said Barnes, who still could recall his first rodeo as a freshman in high school in 1989. “We just came here because it’s our hometown rodeo.”
Of course, what transpired on Sunday only further provided the Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo with that family feel.
While Barnes was the lone rider to set a qualifying score on Friday and Saturday, his older brother Ronnie was the lone rider to last eight seconds on Sunday, and he finished runner-up in the overall standings when everything was said and done.
“We’re just happy if either one of us wins,” said Ronnie, 39, who scored a 51 during Sunday’s go-round. “We compete against each other a lot, and we always have. We pump each other up.”
Family certainly isn’t lost at the annual event at Bolado Park — not even in the bull riding competition, it appears — where family dally team roping, mutton busting and wild cow milking make up just a handful of events, and where the camaraderie behind the arena gates is reflective of a neighborhood barbecue.
Carolyn Renz and daughters Shannon and Allison Renz won the cattle sorting event in 52.54 seconds, Lacy Bourdet and Nick Taliaferro clocked a time of 9.59 seconds in the family dally team roping event to take first place, and Adolfo Nunes, Ruben Nunes and Carlos Uscanga earned the top time (45.93) in wild cow milking.
Adolfo Nunes, meanwhile, was named senior all-around in the track, while John Flook, who finished first in saddle bronc and who, along with Alex Naccarato Jr. and Cody Perry, took first in the wild horse race in 1:01.60, was named senior all-around in the arena and earned the Bob Randick Memorial Perpetual All-Around award.
Haley Pezzini was named junior all-around.
In dally team roping, Mitch Bourdet and Carlos Castillo showed off their leapfrogging ability during Sunday’s final go. The two entered with the second-fastest time after recording an 8.88-second run on Friday, then clocked an 8.73-second go on Sunday to finish in first with the top two-day average (17.61).
Hollister’s Becky Ford had a similar scenario in senior barrel racing on Sunday. The 45-year-old previously had recorded the top time of 17.777 seconds in the event, and was forced to go last on Sunday as a result.
“Usually the girls who come in winning it (on the final day) never win it because the ground is so bad,” said Ford, who noted the holes in the arena left by the previous barrel-racing runs. Ford’s 15-year-old horse, Spatz, even stumbled around the second turn, which nearly cost Ford the title.
Her window already was small after San Benito High junior Tawne Haynish delivered a blistering time of 17.892 seconds on Sunday.
“But I picked him up and let him go,” said Ford, who recorded a time of 18.298 seconds and finished with an average of 36.075, edging Haynish (36.200) by less than 13 one-hundredths of a second for the title.
Born in Panoche, Ford finished fifth last year atop Spatz, who has competed in rodeos from the junior level through college, and even in gymkhana.
“I’ve been offered $30,000 for him and I wouldn’t give him up,” Ford said. “He’s a consistent son of a gun.”
Haylie Stelling has shown consistency in junior barrel racing after winning the event in consecutive years — she recorded an average time of 36.348 last year and a 36.396 this year — while the Romaldo Martin Team has won the pony express race in back-to-back years as well.
Romaldo Martin also won the circular track race last weekend, where other winners included Dana Aviles and Matt Doty (mixed ribbon roping), Corey Walker (tie-down roping), Brandon Sexton (cowboy style bronc riding), Chad Weaver (bulldoggin’), Mikael Bernadette (junior single steer roping), Taylor Hurley (junior barrel race, 12-15 years), Wyatt Naccarato (junior keyhole race, 12-15 years), Kylie Barrett (junior keyhole race, 6-11 years) and Olivia Orsetti, who recorded an impressive time of 37.96 seconds to take the mutton-busting title.
Richie Coefield, who won the cowboy-style saddle bronc event last year, took home the coveted figure-8 title this year, scoring the full 11 points to break a three-way rope-off between himself, Adam Renz and Jerad Renz.
Born in Hollister, Coefield learned how to figure-8 rope from his father, as well as watching the art through Mitt French and Billy Askew.
“When I was little, I thought it was one of the coolest things,” said Coefield, 24. “I had always wanted to win this, and this is my second time winning.”
Coefield, who often uses the figure-8 style of roping while working at the San Benito Cattle Company in Hollister, previously won the event two or three years ago. But it was Sunday’s win that proved to be sweeter for the local roper.
Coefield and his wife, Kellie, are expecting a baby boy on July 20, and the first-place pot was much needed.
Again, the Saddle Horse Show has a distinctive family feel to it.
“Today was sweet,” Coefield said. “Me and my wife were really banking on it.”
