The 76th Annual San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo kicks off a week’s worth of events at the Bolado Park Fairgrounds this weekend.

A memorial roping event dedicated to former competitors Richie Fehlman, Kenny Vierra and Tommy Carreiro, starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday in the Bolado Park arena. Admission is free. On Sunday, the fairgrounds will host Figure-8 and jackpot roping events that are also no charge to watch.

Next Thursday, the annual Saddle Horse Show rodeo will take place on San Benito Street starting at 6:15 p.m. On Friday, the fairgrounds will play host to more events, including a Western Art and Tack Show starting at 3 p.m., a no-host wine and cheese reception, the Elks’ Lodge barbecue under the trees, and the rodeo and horse show that evening.

Saturday is “Tough Enough ToWear Pink” day in support of a local cancer charity. In addition to rodeo events, halter horses will be in the paddock area, the art and tack show continues, and a family barbecue will be available on the patio.

Sunday’s events include the stock horse class eliminations and a continuation of the rodeo and horse show, with reserved seating available for $10 for adults and $3 for toddlers through 11-year-olds.

The Saddle Horse Show features new events this year, including mutton busting for competitors 6 and under; a pony express race; an over-39 class for the Ladies Western Horsemanship competition; and the division of bronc riding into two classes; ranch and traditional.

The Kids Corral at the north end of the grandstand will offer face painting, slides, games, and a “fun jump.” The San Benito County Saddle Horse Association’s museum will be open for viewing during the weekend of the 26th to the 28th and Tomas Garcilazo will perform displays of horsemanship and rope artistry.
